COVID-19

From Monday 8th March remote education will only be made available to pupils who are absent from school for COVID-19 reasons.

This page contains information for parents of our remote education provision

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to children and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education if local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

For details of what to expect where individual pupils are self-isolating, please see the final section of this page.

The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home

Allowing for capacity at school, you can expect your child to be taught a continuation of the broad, balanced and sequenced curriculum planned for their class or year group. Some reasonable adjustments will be required to enable your child to access learning across the full range of subjects, for example, in PE, music or art, where availability of facilities or resources may be a factor.

Teaching will focus on the most important elements to be learnt and on the accumulation of knowledge.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

Children will be provided with stationery to complete the work set by their teacher that can be found on the Tapestry (Reception) or Seesaw (Y1 – Y6) platform). Here there will be daily instructions detailing work set and the school’s expectations.

Teachers can be contacted via email regarding any queries – details contained on the class page of this website.

If the children are asked to isolate during the weekend as a result of a bubble closure then there will be the option for parents to collect resources from the school office if required.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate.

It is our intent, as far as possible, to continue to follow the school’s planned broad, balanced and sequenced curriculum when pupils are being taught at home. Some reasonable adjustments will be made to some subjects where pupils will not have the necessary facilities or resources at home to undertake the learning. For example, in PE, music or art adjustments will be made and alternative provision offered.

Remote teaching and study time each day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:

Primary school-aged pupils

KS1: 3 hours a day, on average

KS2: 4 hours a day, on average

Accessing remote education

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

  • Reception class – posted daily activity via Tapestry
  • All other year groups – posted daily activity via Seesaw
  • All year groups – weekly Microsoft Teams live meetings as directed
  • All year groups – additional weekly information via class page on the school website

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will school support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some children may not have suitable online access at home – you should contact us immediately if you require support with technology.

We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

  • laptop loans (user agreements apply)
  • where you have no internet connection we will offer a connectivity solution in line with DfE Get help with technology during coronavirus
  • printed materials can be requested if you do not have online access, this can be pre-arranged by contacting the class teacher via email or the school office 0151 423 3322; in exceptional circumstances a home delivery will be made
  • pupils can submit work to their teachers using the Tapestry / Seesaw platforms;
  • where parents have no online connectivity, please contact your child’s class teacher by telephone to make personal arrangements for feedback

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches when teaching children remotely:

  • recorded teaching videos
  • live sessions (online lessons)
  • commercially available websites, including those approved by the DfE, supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences e.g. White Rose, Maths Shed, Spelling Shed, BBC Bitesize, Oak Academy
  • printed paper packs produced by teachers (e.g. workbooks, worksheets)
  • textbooks and reading books pupils have at home
  • project work and / or internet research activities

Engagement and feedback

What are school’s expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

We know that everybody’s home circumstances are unique – our expectation is that children and parents do the best that they can under the circumstances they are faced with.

Parents must ensure that all General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and safeguarding disclaimers are returned and assume responsibility in adhering to all safeguarding and e-safety guidance issued by the school.

We will continue to offer a full and balanced curriculum published as a daily timetable of learning – this can act as a guide. Parents should support their child in maintaining a good routine – create a routine that suits your household.

By closely following the daily timetable, the teacher will be able to provide feedback in a timely manner.

Children are expected to save their completed work which then indicates to the teacher that it is complete and ready for feedback. For Reception children, it is useful for staff if parents can photograph work and upload this evidence as an observation to Tapestry ready for feedback.

Work will be set at a level that is accessible for the children with the instructional video / audio / written instructions that accompany the work. Parents may need to offer their child a small amount of support with further questioning, an extra example, or some simple clarification. Parents should encourage their child to be as independent as possible.

Parents have access to their class teacher via email during the hours 9am – 5pm daily and can raise issues / concerns / questions. Teachers will respond as soon as possible.

How will school check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Children should complete as much of the daily learning as possible saving all work onto the platform. Teachers will provide daily feedback.

We offer feedback individually and in the form of a whole class instructional video based on our observations, but also small group video feedback for specific personal targets.

Where there are common misconceptions the teacher may offer group feedback which may be in the form of a group call or recorded video / audio explanation.

Teachers are able to track pupil engagement via the submissions of work on both platforms.

Where a child is struggling with engagement and participation, parents and teachers are able to freely contact one another to discuss barriers to learning and seek an agreed solution.

Parents have access to their class teacher via email during the hours 9am – 5pm daily and can raise issues / concerns / questions. Teachers will respond as soon as possible.

The Headteacher and the Deputy Head have access to all children’s journals and will monitor both engagement levels of remote learning and the progress your child is making. Senior leaders will work with teachers to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of performance and will use this information to review the provision and make changes where necessary.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Work will be assessed daily and feedback will be provided by the teacher addressing misconceptions and move learning forward.

Feedback will take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others.

Daily live meetings will be used to address common misconceptions and clarify learning for the day ahead.

Children will also complete ‘self-mark’ tasks when answers will be shared later in day with the child able to self-assess.

Pre-recorded video / audio feedback for individuals / groups / class will be provided to address misconceptions or provide a set of challenges.

Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some children, for example those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home.

We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those children. Our SENCO, Mr Moore, will support teachers in maintaining regular contact with parents / carers of SEND children.

SEND children have their own personalised learning targets. These will be shared with parents for you to support your child’s learning at home.

Personalised support and bespoke provision matched to the needs of the child will be offered by school and agreed by telephone or email. This will include issuing the loan of physical resources where appropriate, for example, number stacks packs or RWInc materials etc.

Specific activities that are individual to your child and are a continuation of the intervention they would have received in school, e.g. Number Stacks, Memory Games etc., will be assigned via the Seesaw platform.

For our younger children, e.g. Reception or Year 1, we will arrange regular check-ins with you and your child via telephone or Microsoft Teams. Where your child has additional needs and you are experiencing access issues, we will arrange for our teachers to create specific video content that will be assigned to your child’s online journal.

Remote education for self-isolating pupils

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

Where individual children need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will differ from the approach for whole class groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching children simultaneously both at home and in school.

In this case arrangements will be made between parents and the class teacher as to how work for this child will be shared.
